What this building is

Edge Lofts is a soft loft at 625 Queen Street E, in Riverside. It was purpose-built as housing in 2009, not converted from an earlier use. The catalogue records 64 units.

Purpose-built in the loft idiom: open plans, tall windows and exposed services, but new construction rather than a conversion.

Edge Lofts is a six-storey loft condominium at 625 Queen Street East, on the southeast corner of Queen Street East and the East Don Roadway in the Riverside area. The building was developed by Streetcar Developments and designed by Quadrangle Architects. Toronto Star coverage from June 2006 described the project as a 66-unit loft building on the site of a former used-car dealership, and UrbanToronto later cited Edge as one of two Streetcar projects that turned underused sites on this part of Queen Street East into mid-rise housing.

The exterior is mostly glass, with charcoal-grey brick lining the recessed balconies and windows set in a staggered grid. Contemporary reports noted that the glazing was chosen to reduce noise from the streetcar line in front of the building. Suites were planned with 10-foot ceilings, concrete floors and open layouts, in a mix of one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den and two-bedroom plans, and most units have a balcony or terrace. Parking is provided on two underground levels.

The building stands just east of the Don River and the Don Valley Parkway, at the western end of the Riverside stretch of Queen Street East. The 501 Queen streetcar runs along Queen Street in front of the building, and Broadview Avenue lies a short walk to the east. Sync Lofts, another Streetcar Developments building, is nearby on Queen Street East.
