What this building is

Q Lofts is a soft loft at 1205 Queen Street W, in Parkdale. It was purpose-built as housing in 2014, not converted from an earlier use. The catalogue records 70 units.

Purpose-built in the loft idiom: open plans, tall windows and exposed services, but new construction rather than a conversion.

Q Loft is an eight-storey condominium at 1205 Queen Street West, at the corner of Queen Street West and Dufferin Street on the eastern edge of Parkdale. It contains 70 loft and condominium suites, some laid out on two levels and many with balconies or terraces, above shops and services at street level.

The site was previously occupied by an aging low-rise strip plaza and its parking lot, which were demolished around 2012 and cleared for shoring and excavation. The building was developed by Royal Queen Developments and designed by TACT Architecture, which also handled the interiors. The design refers to the early history of the area as a working-class railway suburb, setting a rough stone feature wall against smooth black glazing and spandrel panels on the upper floors. The lobby is finished in black slate walls and white marble floors. The structure had topped off by May 2014, when final exterior finishes were being installed.

The building stands on the 501 Queen streetcar route, and the 29 Dufferin bus runs north along Dufferin Street to Dufferin station on Line 2. West Queen West lies to the east, and to the west Queen Street continues through Parkdale toward Roncesvalles Avenue.
