What this building is

Market Wharf Lofts is a soft loft at 1-3 Market Street, in St. Lawrence. It was purpose-built as housing in 2013, not converted from an earlier use. The catalogue records 105 units.

Purpose-built in the loft idiom: open plans, tall windows and exposed services, but new construction rather than a conversion.

Market Wharf is a mixed-use residential development on Market Street, directly south of the St. Lawrence Market, developed by Context Development and designed by architectsAlliance, with interiors by Tact Design. The architects list the project as completed in 2013. It reclaimed a former waterfront brownfield site in the core of the old city, between the market to the north and the rail corridor and lake to the south.

The development combines a 34-storey residential tower with a masonry-clad podium whose massing and brick echo the neighbouring market buildings. The podium wraps an above-grade parking structure with single-storey flats and carries a row of two-storey townhouses with terraces, together with a curved pavilion on its roof. The tower is a glass and steel form with curving balconies of fritted white glass, intended to recall the rippling surface of the lake or billowing sails. Suite types range from single-storey flats in the podium and tower to two-storey townhouses and one- and two-storey penthouses.

The site lies in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood near Lower Jarvis Street and Front Street East, a short walk from the waterfront and the downtown core. The architects describe it as the western anchor of Crombie Park, the green space at the centre of the St. Lawrence community. King Street East, two blocks north, is served by the 504 King streetcar, and Union Station is within walking distance to the west.
