What this building is
Liberty Market Lofts is a soft loft at 5 Hanna Avenue, in Liberty Village. It was purpose-built as housing in 2013, not converted from an earlier use. The catalogue records 295 units.
Purpose-built in the loft idiom: open plans, tall windows and exposed services, but new construction rather than a conversion.
Liberty Market Lofts is a mid-rise residential building at 5 Hanna Avenue in Liberty Village, built just south of the Liberty Market Building, a former warehouse later converted to office and retail uses. It was developed by Lifetime Developments with BLVD Developments and designed by Wallman Architects, which lists the building at 13 storeys with 300 live-work suites and a completion year of 2013. UrbanToronto described it as a 12-storey design when the tower crane went up in April 2011.
Most suites are two-storey lofts, with living, dining and work space on the lower level and bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper level overlooking a double-height living room. Early coverage noted living room ceilings of about 17 feet and balconies on every second floor. The L-shaped plan frames a south-facing forecourt planted with birch trees and crossed by diagonal paths, and a through-lobby connects the forecourt to a laneway along the north edge of the site.
The exterior draws on neighbouring buildings. Bands of red masonry echo the adjacent building at 171 East Liberty Street, and metal-clad balcony frames refer to the industrial origins of Liberty Village. The building sits between residential blocks to the east and commercial buildings to the west. In 2020 Lifetime Developments launched a separate 28-storey tower by Wallman Architects on the same Liberty Market complex. The 504 King streetcar runs along King Street West to the north of Liberty Village, and Exhibition GO station lies to the southwest.
