What this building is
Bellefair Kew Beach Lofts is a soft loft at 2 Bellefair Avenue, in The Beach. It was purpose-built as housing in 2015, not converted from an earlier use. The catalogue records 29 units.
Purpose-built in the loft idiom: open plans, tall windows and exposed services, but new construction rather than a conversion.
Bellefair Kew Beach Residences is a five-storey condominium at the corner of Queen Street East and Bellefair Avenue in The Beach, across Queen Street from Kew Gardens. It was developed by Reserve Properties and designed by RAWdesign, with heritage architect Christopher Borgal of Goldsmith Borgal and Company and interiors by II by IV Design. The project combines 23 condominium suites with six three-storey townhouses, and includes retail space at street level.
The site was home to a brick church built in 1922 as Bellefair Methodist and later used by the United Church of Canada. Beach United Church occupied the building before relocating to Wineva Avenue. The redevelopment retained the historic church facade along Queen Street, adding new entrances and feature windows to the brick wall, while new construction rises behind and above it. Daily Commercial News noted that the church walls are up to 21 inches thick in places. Behind the facade, the townhouses are finished in dark brown masonry and wood and are arranged around a shared second-level courtyard, and the top floor holds penthouse suites, some on two levels with rooftop terraces.
Queen Street East at Bellefair Avenue is served by the 501 Queen streetcar. Kew Gardens extends south from Queen Street toward the boardwalk and the Lake Ontario shoreline.
